Zero Carbon House

The Department of the Environment join Aerobord’s technical team onsite at Ireland’s first zero carbon concrete house – Mature Trees.

A first for Ireland in the making as Michael O’ Dowd works to construct what is expected to be Ireland’s  First Zero Carbon Concrete House.  Located in the picturesque countryside near to Mount Temple in Co. Westmeath, Michael has set out to demonstrate that low energy construction is possible using materials and trades traditional to Ireland’s construction industry.

Having decided on concrete as the primary construction material Michael called on Aerobord’s 50 year experience of insulating Irish homes to provide innovative yet tested solutions to the extremely low U Values required to ensure the build performed as his design.

This zero carbon house will be self-sufficient and will payback the carbon used in its construction over the life-time of the building.  The challenge for Aerobord was to achieve a U value of 0.10W/m2K in all three elements, i.e. floor, walls and roof.

Aerobord and her sister companies Aircell and Springvale have worked closely with Mr. O’ Dowd to deliver the floor and roof systems.  In early 2009 work will commence on the external wall insulation.  For information on the techniques employed in the Mature Trees build feel free to contact us at lowenergy@aerobord.ie
